Music Festivals in August

Tokyo goes Sonic, Washington’s Gorge goes Country, plus fests in Seattle, Olso, Budapest and Lollapalooza in Chicago.

    Quincy, Washington

    Country comes to the Gorge Amphitheatre for the Watershed Music Festival. The Northwest’s biggest country music party had a 2013 lineup that included Luke Bryan, Toby Keith, Brad Paisley, Lee Brice, Terri Clark, Kip Moore, Thompson Square, Chris Young and Shooter Jennings.

    Chicago, Illinois

    The roving music festival Lollapalooza, which began in 1991, has found a home in Chicago’s Grant Park. The 2013 lineup included Nine Inch Nails, The Cure, Mumford and Sons, Phoenix, The Killers, Vampire Weekend, Queens of the Stone Age, The National, New Order and The Postal Service.

    Budapest, Hungary

    A small island in the capital city hosts the big Sziget Festival, an eight-day musical celebration. The 2013 lineup included Blur, David Guetta, Mika, Regina Spektor, Bat For Lashes, Flogging Molly, Dizzee Rascal, Little Boots and The Joy Formidable.

    Oslo, Norway

    Oslo’s fjord-flanked Medieval Park celebrates music from around the world at its Oya Festival. The 2014 lineup includes Queens of the Stone Age, Royksopp and Robyn, Neutral Milk Hotel, Jonathan Wilson, Hanne Kolsto, Deafheaven and Spidergawd.

    Rees-Haldern, Germany

    Haldern Pop, the annual open-air music festival in the North Rhine Westphalia region of Germany, features a wide spectrum of international acts. The 2013 lineup included Efterklang, Anna Von Hausswolff, Balthazar, Regina Spektor, Glen Hansard, Half Moon Run and Rubik.
    AUG 7 - 9

    San Francisco, California

    A crowd of around 60,000 heads to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands. The 2013 lineup included Paul McCartney, Red Red Hot Chili Peppers, Nine Inch Nails, Phoenix, Kaskade, Vampire Weekend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, D’Angelo, The National, Jurassic 5, Willie Nelson, Grizzly Bear and Darly Hall and John Oates.

    Tokyo and Osaka, Japan

    Summer Sonic Tokyo takes place in the twin cities of Tokyo and Osaka. The 2013 lineup included Metallica, Alt-J, Cheap Trick, Fall Out Boy, Linkin Park, Mew, M.I.A., Muse, Earth, Wind and Fire, Cyndi Lauper, John Legend, Pet Shop Boys and Smashing Pumpkins.

    Reading, U.K.

    Around 90,000 music-lovers gather at Little John's Farm in central Reading for the annual Reading Festival. The 2014 lineup includes Blink-182, Jake Bugg, Disclosure, Metronomy, Of Mice and Men, Wilkinson and I Am Legion.
    AUG 22 - 24

    Seattle, Washington

    Labor Day weekend sees performances of dance, theater, comedy and music at Seattle’s Bumbershoot. The 2013 lineup included Death Cab for Cutie, MGMT, Kendrick Lamar, Crystal Castles, Gary Numan, The Breeders, Matt and Kim, Tegan and Sara, Deerhunter and Superchunk.
