Music Festivals in August

Tokyo goes Sonic, Washington’s Gorge goes Country, plus fests in Seattle, Olso, Budapest and Lollapalooza in Chicago.

    Quincy, Washington

    Country comes to the Gorge Amphitheatre for the Watershed Music Festival. The Northwest’s biggest country music party, with a 2014 lineup that includes Tim McGraw, Lady Antebellum, Jake Owen, Billy Currington, Eli Young Band, Joe Diffie, Randy Houser, Justin Moore, Kip Moore and Cassadee Pope.

    Chicago, Illinois

    The roving music festival, which began in 1991, has found a home in Chicago’s Grant Park. The 2014 lineup includes Eminem, Outkast, Skrillex, Arctic Monkeys, Kings of Leon, Lorde, Zedd, Nas, Sebastian Ingrosso, The Avett Brothers, Interpol, Spoon, The Head and the Heart and Courtney Barnett.

    Portland, Oregon

    Venues across Portland host over 150 acts for MusicfestNW. Portland’s largest music festival features an eclectic lineup of indie, hip-hop and punk. The 2013 lineup included Neko Case, The Head and the Heart, Animal Collective, Superchunk, Shuggie Otis and Washed Out.

    Budapest, Hungary

    A small island in the capital city hosts the big Sziget Festival, an eight-day musical celebration. The 2014 lineup includes Queens of the Stone Age, Calvin Harris, The Prodigy, Lily Allen, Outkast, Manic Street Preachers, Blink 182, Cee Lo Green, Jimmy Eat World, Placebo, Imagine Dragons, Deadmau5, Madness, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Skrillex, Jake Bugg, Jagwar Ma and London Grammar.

    Oslo, Norway

    Oslo’s fjord-flanked Medieval Park celebrates music from around the world at its Oya Festival. The 2014 lineup includes Queens of the Stone Age, Royksopp, Robyn, Neutral Milk Hotel, Jonathan Wilson, Hanne Kolsto, Deafheaven and Spidergawd.
    AUG 5 - 9

    Rees-Haldern, Germany

    The annual open-air music festival in the North Rhine Westphalia region of Germany, features a wide spectrum of international acts. The 2014 lineup includes Alexi Murdoch, Black Lips, Chet Faker, Conor Oberst, First Aid Kit, Kurt Vile, Patti Smith and Sun Kil Moon.
    AUG 7 - 9

    San Francisco, California

    A crowd of around 60,000 heads to San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park for Outside Lands. The 2014 lineup includes Kanye West, The Killers, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, Arctic Monkeys, Death Cab for Cutie, Tiesto and Disclosure, Kacey Musgraves, Tegan and Sara, Spoon, the Flaming Lips, Ray LaMontagne, Atmosphere and Chvrches.
    AUG 8 - 10

    Tokyo and Osaka, Japan

    Summer Sonic Tokyo takes place in the twin cities of Tokyo and Osaka. The 2014 lineup includes Arctic Monkeys, Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation, Avenged Sevenfold and Phoenix.
    AUG 16 - 17

    Reading, U.K.

    Around 90,000 music-lovers gather at Little John's Farm in central Reading for the annual Reading Festival. The 2014 lineup includes Blink-182, Jake Bugg, Disclosure, Metronomy, Of Mice and Men, Wilkinson and I Am Legion.
    AUG 22 - 24

    Seattle, Washington

    Labor Day weekend sees performances of dance, theater, comedy and music at Seattle’s Bumbershoot. The 2014 lineup includes Foster The People, J. Cole, Wu-Tang Clan, The Replacements, The Head and The Heart, Elvis Costello and The Imposters, Panic! At The Disco, The Afghan Whigs, Los Lobos and Luscious Jackson.
